On December 14th, 2022, Google announced their December 2022 Link Spam Update.

The update will target unnatural links meant to manipulate search rankings, and neutralize any positive effect they have on rankings.

Google notes the AI-powered spam prevention system used for identification of unnatural links is known as SpamBrain.

This update to the algorithm will detect spam directly, and will also be able to detect websites buying links, and websites used for the main purpose of passing link equity through outgoing links.

The update will take about two weeks to roll out, and be fully rolled out by the beginning of 2023. We published a YouTube video talking about the Spam Link Update on our channel.

Google said that:

Ranking may change as spammy links are neutralized and any credit passed by these unnatural links are lost. This launch will affect all languages.

it can now detect both sites buying links-- from our post covers this. It's possible we've used it in some edge / minor situations, but this is the first real implementation of it for link spam (hence why we did a post about it)

Link Spam is Against Google’s Guidelines

This update is not unanticipated, as Google’s Quality Guidelines warn against using link spam to create a false sense of relevancy.

There are many websites that specialize in creating link wheels of interconnecting sites, from which they sell links from keyword-rich articles. These are known as “article farms” or “link farms”. Generally, these are not the best places to seek back links to your website.

Our advice is to create content and articles on your website that people will want to link to without exchanging compensation, and preferably, earning links from industry websites that are respected.
