This year, 2022, was a landmark year for Lockedown SEO in many ways. It was the most successful year to date for the company, following some other very strong years. Thank you to my clients, friends, and family. I appreciate each one of you.

Ten years. It’s hard to believe it’s been going this long, right? On a personal note, it feels good knowing I’ve achieved everything that I originally set out to do, and more.

If you are new to the annual tradition here, every year I write a year in a review for my business and sometimes my own state of being. You can see previous years here: 2021, 2020, 2019, 2018, 2017, 2016, 2015, 2014, 2013.

New Things Happening

Late 2021 and all of 2022 saw a new team member introduced. John Koinange is a Digital Marketing Associate who helps part-time behind the scenes with a variety of tasks. I appreciate his help; it makes a substantial positive difference. You can follow him on Twitter: @JohnKoinange.

The Lockedown SEO YouTube channel surpassed 1500 subscribers and 250k views. Thanks to everyone who watched, left comments, and asked questions in 2022, we truly could not do it without you.

We also saw some great successes for our clients, as one was acquired, and some are having record years in revenue. We love to see our clients win.

Lastly, during this year, we were asked to help a client with a thorough accessibility audit and tasked with making necessary changes. In the course of that work, I turned an eye towards our own site and code base. I realized we were falling short in some accessibility areas. We made some needed improvements to our own site, which may be subtle to most of you, but hopefully it is helping more people use the site easily now. (Note: Let us know if there is something we missed on the site. We want to constantly improve.)

Changing SEO Trends

Google and other search engines keep improving their ranking algorithms, and changing the layouts of the Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs). For some categories, there are many ads at the top of the SERPs, and running ads is advantageous. We had many new clients and a few legacy clients try Google Ads for the first time. For many, this helped produce the qualified leads they were seeking. We had more people approach us about AdWords (Google Ads) than in any previous year.

Many of our potential and realized clients were interested in ranking in Google Maps outside of their base of operations. The unfortunate reality is Google Maps is essentially a driving app. It gives transportation directions for businesses close to you. This doesn’t dissuade people from asking questions, which is understandable. Many people want to get an advantage, naturally. It is noteworthy that people see the 3-pack map as something that customers might gravitate towards clicking, before the organic search results.

Other Stuff

We had a solid year, and for whatever reason (thank the heavens), we didn’t lose business during the COVID pandemic (2019-present). Knock on wood, we hope to continue that in 2023.

Our base of operations moved to Natomas. Sacramento is an awesome city, I love it here.

I’ve been capturing some of the street art in Sacramento on our Instagram, go check it out!
